The Auckland Regional Forensic Psychiatry Service, or the Mason Clinic as it is often known, is the largest Forensic Mental Health Service in New Zealand. We serve the four Northern District Health Boards including all courts in the northern region and five prisons.

We deliver a comprehensive range of Forensic Mental Health Services, including secure inpatient acute and rehabilitation services which connect to community rehabilitation services, services for offenders with an intellectual disability, culture specific programmes for Maori, court liaison and prison mental health services. This includes a regional service to Northland Region Corrections Facility at Ngawha and Northland.

The Mason Approach has a number of core values which include providing respectful, safe and involving services, delivering recovery and strengths focused care that is culturally appropriate, evidence and values based.

Our inpatient services consist of seven forensic mental health inpatient units and an intellectual disability unit that assess, treat and assist in the recovery of people with mental illness or intellectual disability who have committed a criminal offence or are at high risk in the community.

We continue to develop the services for the future and are looking to recruit additional Taurawhiri - Cultural Advisors. Taurawhiri assess the cultural needs of Māori patients, provide written cultural assessments and facilitate cultural programmes and interventions.

We are looking for someone who has a good understanding of tribal customs and values, is confident in speaking Māori and has experiences in Māori health care to work as an integral part of our Forensic Prison Team servicing the five correctional facilities in our region.


  • Confident speaker of Te Reo Maori
  • Knowledge of Maori community networks
  • Understanding of Maori social and health issues
  • Knowledge of own tribal history, whaikorero, karakia
  • Strong communicator
  • Full drivers licence


  • Work experience in Mental Health organisations
  • Knowledge of substance abuse programmes
  • A Bachelor of Maori Studies
