The Student Services Division (SSD) draws together the many different aspects of student support services from across the

organisation in order to achieve an integrated and collaborative institutional response to students. The three driving themes

for the Division are Access, Engagement and Success. The Division is made up of units, each with their own area of

specialisation, but all addressing these three core areas. Student Services work collaboratively across the Division and

institution to enhance the overall student experience, student wellbeing and academic and vocational success. As well as

the generic supports available for all Ara students, it is the responsibility of the SSD to facilitate specialist interventions to

support target groups in line with the Ara strategic goals and key Government targets, including; Māori, Pasifika, Youth

(under 25 years), international, refugee and migrant students.

The Division structure consists of four units:
1. Academic Support (Library, Learning Services, Disability Services)

2. Student Support (Māori Student Advisors, Pasifika Student Advisors, International/Refugee/Migrant/Bilingual/

Women Student Advisors and Youth Advisors, Student Voice, Advocacy, Hardship and Scholarships Advice)

3. Student Transition (Graduate Community, Careers Centre, Employment Transition Liaison)

4. Student Wellbeing Services (Health Centre, Accommodation, Student Events, Recreation Centre, Early Learning



The primary responsibility is to lead, manage and report on the student advisory services within the Student Support Team
and to ensure a seamless and coordinated student advisory service is available to students. This is a key role in the Student
Support leadership group.

This includes planning, coordination and effective leadership of the team; administrative and financial responsibilities;
development of relevant policies and procedures and ensuring regulatory requirements are upheld.

The Manager will:

  • Model exemplary standards of service to all Ara students, staff and stakeholders.
  • Work with the advisors and the Student Support leadership team to plan and deliver a comprehensive range of
support services that enhance learning potential and is responsive to all students.

  • Contribute to the Student Support Team planning and directions.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and lead, implement and evaluate new initiatives in line with Ara and SSD
developments that contribute to the Strategic Plan.

  • Promote and model collaboration within SSD and across Ara through highly effective communication.
There are two key objectives for this role:
1. Manage the operations of Māori student support including:
  • Provide day to day leadership and support to the student advisors – Māori/kaitaunaki
  • Promote and explain the Māori student support initiatives to students, whanau and Ara colleagues
  • Support the Student Support Manager to improve, grow and facilitate Ara Māori initiatives and Māori
student outcomes.

2. Manage the operations of youth student support including:
  • Provide day to day leadership and support to the Student Advisors - Youth team
  • Promote and explain the Youth student support initiatives to students, whānau and Ara colleagues
  • Support the Student Support Manager to improve, grow and facilitate Ara Youth initiatives and Youth

In addition, the manager is a key part of the Student Services Division and Student Support Leadership teams.

This role requires a combination of skills and experience in all aspects of business management including working
collaboratively and as part of a team as well as a leader in a complex and dynamic environment. The position is a member
of the Student Support leadership team. The role requires the position holder to work co-operatively and collaboratively
with managers, staff and stakeholders to achieve not only their own team’s objectives but also that of the wider Division
and the Ara strategic goals, mission and vision. The position holder will have or will develop a regional profile with
stakeholders and will represent Ara in various fora.


  • Tertiary Bachelors qualification in education/humanities related area or actively progressing to achieving such a
qualification or

  • Te Reo Tertiary qualification or equivalent and relevant experience in Te Ao Māori
  • Extensive experience working with Māori and with youth
  • Experience in the tertiary or secondary education sectors preferably in transition
  • Operational management experience, including team leadership .

  • Experience in working with Māori and Youth preferably in a transition or vocational learning environment.
  • Successful management and/or leadership experience in a complex and dynamic operating environment.
  • Experience in managing the competing demands of people and events.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the importance of the relationship between general wellbeing and learning

While Ara is a tertiary institute delivering education and catering predominantly for adult learners there remains a duty of care to the increasing
numbers of younger students and those individuals or groups who may be defined as “vulnerable” by virtue of age, health, welfare or special
need. With an increasing focus on youth in particular and the additional pastoral care this involves Ara Management have determined that best
practice involves all staff undergoing a criminal conviction history check. As part of the appointment process shortlisted candidates will be asked
to give consent to Ara to submit a request. Offers of employment will be subject to the results of the check. A regime of checking employees has
been developed.

Core worker
For NZ Police vetting purposes this role is classified as a core (children’s) worker because there is regular contact with students who may
be youth, children, elderly or vulnerable adults. This position meets the criteria for a check under the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014 and
as such Ara will request a NZ Police Vet check disclosing your criminal conviction history.
